As per the Hindu calendar, Devshayani Ekadashi occurs on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Ashadh month (around June-July). The 4 months of Chaturmas end on Prabodhini Ekadashi, which is the eleventh day of the bright fortnight in the month of Kartik (around October-November).

It is believed that during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu goes to rest and awakens from his slumber of four months on Prabodhini Ekadashi. Chaturmas includes the months of Ashadha, Shravan, Bhadrapad, and Ashwin.
By observing the rituals and taking vows during the period of Chaturmas, individuals are blessed with prosperity, fearlessness, sense of responsibility and protection. The path of an individual is cleared on this auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi.

Do’s of Chaturmas
- Good deeds should be performed. The Karma of an individual matters during this period. Purity in the heart of an individual is important to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu.
- This time is good for devotion, visiting temples and performing religious activities.
- It is recommended to stay in one place and to avoid travelling or change in work.
- Readings of discourses and teachings of the Lord should be done.
- Clothes and food is donated to priests as an act of charity for blessings from the Lord.
- Eating a meal once a day is followed by many devotees for these four months.
Don’ts of Chaturmas
- No salt - For sweetness of voice
- No oil - To prolong life
- No licorice and oil - To obtain wealth
- No cooked food - To obtain purity
- No sleeping on a bed - To receive shelter from Lord Vishnu
- No alcohol - To achieve strength and get rid of diseases
- Avoiding hot food - For a longer life of offsprings
- No milk or yogurt - For a peaceful life
- Auspicious ceremonies are avoided in the house, especially marriage ceremonies., thread ceremonies, shifting to a new residence, etc.
Devshayani Ekadashi Puja Vidhi
- Holy baths are taken early in the morning to cleanse body and soul.
- Devotees worship Lord Vishnu to lead a blissful life.
- Food is not consumed on the occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi vrata.
- Mantras are chanted to please Lord Vishnu and seek his blessings.
The Devshayani Ekadashi vrata will be observed on July 15, 2016. The Parana Muhurat for Devshayani Ekadashi is on July 16, 2016 from 13:48 - 16:32.
On this day, the religious procession of pilgrims known as Pandharpur Ashadha Ekadashi Waari Yatra culminates at Pandharpur. Lord Vitthal (incarnation of Lord Vishnu) is worshipped on this day in Maharashtra at the Lord Vitthal Temple in Pandharpur after a 21 day long journey by the devotees and is also observed by thousands in the country to be blessed with success and prosperity by Lord Vishnu.
Thousands of devotees gather on the banks of river Godavari at Kalaram temple and take a dip in the holy waters to pay their tribute to Lord Rama.
During this period, A great proportion of the Yama frequencies reach the earth due to decrease in sunlight because of the monsoon. Yama frequency is a Tama-predominant frequency, to be able to bear the effects of the negative frequencies the Sattva frequency should be increased in our lives, which can be done by celebrating the religious festivals during this time like Guru Purnima, Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh chaturthi, Raksha bandhan, Navratri, Karva chauth and Diwali and performing religious activities.
