The appearance of Goddess Mahagauri includes four arms, seated on Vrishabha (bull), lower right hands carrying Damru, other two hands are in different positions and upper left hand is holding Trishul. On this day Nine girls are invited by the worshippers and then fed with a Prasad food. Since, the 9 girls are believed to be the 9 manifestation of Goddess Durga. Traditionally, Vishu is celebrated as Malayalam New Year and it is the first day of Malayalam month Medam. On this day, Vishukani (a collection of some auspicious things like betel nuts, betel leaves, vermillion, turmeric, rice, holy book, cloth, etc.) is the first thing that one sees after waking up in the morning.


On April 14, 2016, the Tamil New Year will be celebrated. On this day, it is believed that Lord Brahma created the world. The celebration is carried by exchanging greetings by saying 'Puthandu Vazthukkal', making Kolams outside the home. Moreover, the day is also celebrated as the harvest festival in many parts of India.

Bohag Bihu

The Assamese New Year will be celebrated on April 14, 2016. Although, the celebrations begins from April 13, 2016 i.e, the first day of Bhogali Bihu which is dedicated to cattle. Bohag Bihu is also known as Rongali Bihu and is celebrated for three (Goru Bihu, Bohag or Rongali Bihu and, Gosain Bihu) consecutive days. The first day of Bhogali Bihu is dedicated to cattle. 

Pohela Boishakh

It is the first day of Bengali calendar and is celebrated as a Bengali New Year. It is widely popular in Bangladesh and in Indian states like Bengal, Tripura and Assam. Moreover, the name ‘Pohela’ means first and ‘Baisakh’ means the first month of Bengal calendar.
