  • Prepare your Rakhi plate. Keep Roli, Kumkum, Akshat and Rakhi on it.
  • Make your brother sit on a seat (Aasan), and apply Tilak on his forehead. Then, tie Rakhi on his right wrist.
  • Feed him sweets, then perform an Aarti of your brother.
  • After that, brothers should present a gift or money to their sisters. It is also the obligation and duty of brothers to take a vow to protect their sisters and honor their virtue.

Importance of Raksha Bandhan and Mythological Stories

Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated since ancient ages in India. From Mahabharata Era to the history of Medieval India, there are several stories mentioned about Raksha Bandhan. Some of them are mentioned below:

Story of Draupadi and Shri Krishna: There was a unique story in Mahabharata Era about Raksha Bandhan. When Lord Krishna killed Shishupal, his finger got hurt. Everyone was looking for a cloth to stop the bleeding. At that time, Draupadi tore a part of her Sari and wrapped it around Lord Krishna’s finger. It was the day of Purnima during the month of Shravana. Being grateful towards her, Shri Krishna made a promise that he will protect her. That is why, he came to her rescue during Draupadi’s Cheer-Haran by Dushasana.

Story of Sikandar and Puru: The wife of Emperor Sikandar, made his enemy Puru, or King Porus, her half-brother. She asked him to promise her not to kill her husband. Then, during the war, King Porus spared Sikander’s life. Not only this, when Porus tried to attack him, he remembered his promise to his half-sister, and didn’t attack him, and became a prisoner. Seeing the nobility of King Porus, Sikander gave King Porus his country back.

So, from the above two stories, we can see the purity and significance of this auspicious festival. Not only the above stories, but there are several stories in Indian history that have mentioned various examples of sacrifice and love done by brothers and sisters for each other.

AstroSage wishes our readers a very happy and blissful Raksha Bandhan.

What is Shani Sade Sati: Significance & Remedies

People get fearful when they hear about Sade Sati of Shani and Dhaiya. Due to Saturn being tagged as a cruel planet in Vedic astrology, people have a belief that it brings pain, but it is not the case. Lord Shani is hailed as the Punisher or Penitent, which is why he is also called as the Justice-loving Judge in Kaliyug. He churns out the fruit of every action, good or bad, done by a native in this world. Shani has no claim to position, status and prestige, as it doesn’t matter to him. He punishes every person equally and gives out justice.

Saturn is pleased when a person asks for forgiveness for his crimes and becomes determined to do good deeds. At the same time, Saturn is very cruel when it comes to punishing a man for his sins. Because when Shani punishes, he deprives one of wealth, honor, prestige and all amenities.

Shani Sade Sati

Sade Sati means seven and a half years. All Navagrahas transit in 12 zodiac signs. The journey period of planets in a zodiac sign is different. Among them, Saturn's duration is the highest, because it transits for about two and a half years in a zodiac sign. When it makes a transit from birth moon sign from twelfth house, rising phase of Shani Sade Sati begins. When it transits over the birth moon sign, peak phase of Shani Sade Sati remains. Now, when it enters in the second house from moon sign, setting phase of Shani Sade Sati begins. When it gets out from this house, Shani Sade Sati ends.

As Shani remains in a zodiac sign for about 2.5 years, so its journey in these three houses adds up to 7.5 years. That is why it is called Sade Sati. apart from that, when Shani enters in fourth and eighth house from birth moon sign, it is called Dhaiya or CHoti Sade Sati. its duration is 2.5 years.

Remedies for Shani Sade Sati

The simplest way to avoid the inauspicious effects of Shani Sade Sati is by performing auspicious deeds and repenting for all bad deeds ever done. Apart from this, religious and Vedic remedies can also be carried out to avoid such malefic effects.

  • To appease Lord Shani, worship him on Saturday. Along with that, offer food made in Sarso or Mustard oil to poor, needy, labour and dog.
  • Use mustard oil, black salt, surma, camphor (kapoor), kajal made by camphor, black sesame, black urad, iron nails, perfumes etc. when worshipping Shani Dev and donate them as well.
  • To get the blessings of Shani Dev, it is beneficial to read Shani Chalisa, Hanuman Chalisa or Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra on every Saturday.
  • Pour mustard oil in an iron vessel, see your reflection in it and donate the vessel. It is called Chaya Patra Daan.
  • Donation of items related to Saturn planet should be done in Saturn's Hora and Saturn's nakshatras (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada) on Saturday at noon or in the evening.
  • Respect your maternal uncle and the elderly people. Always keep your employees or servants happy.
  • Chant the Shani Beej Mantra for getting rid of Shani Dosha. Mantra - “ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः / oṃ prāṃ prīṃ prauṃ saḥ śanaiścarāya namaḥ”.
  • To please Saturn, you can also chant this mantra - "ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः/oṃ śaṃ śanaiścarāya namaḥ”.
In Vedic astrology, Saturn has been called a cruel planet, but it is your friend, not your enemy. He rolls out the fruits of every deed in a justified manner. Hereby, if you want to avoid its malefic effects, do good deeds and think positively.

We hope that you like this article based on Shani Sade Sati. AstroSage wishes you a good and bright future!

  • During this festival, people put on new clothes on this day, which is known as Onakkodi.

  • There are many Hindu Keralite who install an image of Thrikkakara Appan or Onatthappan in their homes.
  • During the festival, Hindu temples are decorated with lamps, Diyas and candles. A Palmyra tree is set up in front of temples in Kerala. It is decorated and then, lit with a torch and burned to ashes, signifying the sacrifice of King Mahabali.
  • Onam festival is also related to creativity as potters and weavers go for an extra mile to fulfil the increased demands of the products, especially in regions of North Kerala such as Kannur and Kasargod. Handloom fairs are a great attraction of the spirit of Onam festivities during these days.

History of Onam

According to legends, Kerala was ruled by a very powerful King, Mahabali. It is said that when King Mahabali was the ruler of Kerala, there was nobody in the region who was sad or unhappy. Every single man was happy and full of peace and they respected their King to the utmost valour. King Mahabali was not only loved by his people but respected by people of other region as well. King Mahabali was also known by two other names - Maveli and Onathappan.

King Mahabali ruled over all 3 Lokas - Deva Loka (Heaven), Bhu Loka (Earth), and Patal Loka (Nether World). Even after belonging from a demon clan, his generous nature was something that people loved the most about him. He defeated devtas to win the heaven. So, they requested Lord Vishnu to help them get back their kingdom. In order to help them, Lord Vishnu took Vamana Avatar, the form of a dwarf Brahmin.

As we all know that offering donations to Brahmins is considered auspicious. Therefore, when Vamana visited the King, the Brahmin requested 3 steps of land from him. King agreed to this. Then, Vamana grew bigger in size, and covered heaven with his first foot, earth with his second foot, and as there was no area left so, the King offered his head to him. Brahmin pushed him down to the Patal Loka with his third step.

Lord Vishnu was pleased with his act of generosity and asked him for a wish. The King requested the God if he can meet his people once a year. The wish was granted. Hence, every year on this day of Onam or Thiruvonam, King Mahabali visits his people.

Mythological Significance of Nag Panchami

There are some Indian mythological scriptures such as Skanda Purana, Agni Purana, Narada Purana and Mahabharata, which give information about Puja rituals for worshipping snake and also mention its religious and mythological significance. As per ancient beliefs, it is believed that the origin of snakes is associated with Lord Brahma, and that is the reason why worshipping them is considered auspicious. The son of Lord Brahma, known as Kashyapa had four wives. His first wife was the mother of all Devtas, second wife of Garudas, third wife of Nagas and fourth wife was the mother of all Asuras. The third wife of Kashyapa, named Kadroo, had given birth to Nagas. Therefore, Nagas (snakes) are also known by the name of Kadrooja.

Nine Species of Snakes (Nagas)

The Sanskrit names of 9 Great Nāgas are Anant, Vāsuki, Sheshnāg, Padmanābha, Kambala, Shankhapāla, Dhārtarāshtra, Takshaka, and Kaliya. Nag Panchami, also known as Bhratru Panchami, is the day when sisters along with their brothers worship snakes and their burrows (snake hole) to seek the blessings of snakes. Sisters performed this Puja for the well-being of their brothers, so that they do not suffer or steer clear of snake bites. This Hindu festival is also celebrated as Vishari Puja or Bishari Puja in some regions of the country, where Bisha or Visha means “poison”.

Importance of Snakes in Hindu Religion and Vedic Astrology

India has always been known as the land of snake worshippers and snakes. People of India celebrates the festival of Nag Panchami in honor of serpents and snakes. During the festival of Nag Panchami, people wash the snakes with milk ensuring their families safety from danger of snakes.

It is believed that snakes are imbibed with more powers than humans. The connection of snakes with Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Subramanya, shows their religious significance and hence, shows the devotion of Hindus towards cobra and other snakes throughout the country. The relation of snake with Moon nodes in Hindu astrology is known for more than one reason. It is believed that the tail of the snake is considered as Ketu (Dragon’s tail) and the head as Rahu (Dragon’s head). If seven planets of an individual are surrounded between Rahu and Ketu in reverse order, it is said that the person has Kalasarpa Dosha or defect due to black snakes in his Zodiac Chart. It brings bad luck and hardship in an individual’s life. Therefore, it can be rectified by worshipping the snakes on the day of Nag Panchami.

Celebration of Nag Panchami in Different States

In the state of Maharashtra, there is a city called Nagpur where snakes have special eminence. The name of the city is derived from the word Naga (means snake) as the place or the place is full of snakes. Mahal area in Nagpur has a temple called Nagoba, where worshippers offer special prayers to snakes on Nag Panchami day. It is said that the temple was found under the Neem tree, known as “Nagoba ka vota”.

In Banaras (Varanasi), Akharas (where wrestling practice has been performed) are decorated on the day of Nag Panchami. Additionally, Akharas are cleaned and painted with images of snakes, priests, and the gurus. Here, the festival is important as wrestlers are the symbol of virility and Naga symbolizes the “scheme of virility”. Therefore, the decoration of Akharas and images of snake shows snakes drinking milk.

In Kashmir, snakes have been worshipped by Hindu people from a very long time. In north eastern states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Assam, Goddess Manasa Devi is worshipped on this occasion. In Hindu mythology, Manasa Devi is considered the Queen of Snakes and sister of Vasuki. She is also believed to be the Snake Goddess, Jaratkaru, the same snake that was wrapped around Mandarachal mountain during Samudra Manthan. In Maharashtra, devotees go round the burrows (snake hole) and sing songs in praise of snake gods. Furthermore, Manasa plant symbolizing the Goddess Mansa is also worshipped on this day. It is not only worshiped in the month of Shravan, but also in the month of Bhadra.

In Karnataka, the preparation for the festival starts on the New Moon day of Bhima Amavasya, which is five days prior to the festival of Panchami. The festival is celebrated within the boundaries of the house. The devotees offer raw milk and green Bananas. Girls offer prayers to the images made with white clay and painted with white dots. During the ritual, they offer prayers and take a vow by tying a thread dipped in turmeric paste on their right wrist. An image of snake is drawn on the floor in front of the house and milk is offered as a religious offering. Before one night of the festival, they complete the fast or take a salt free diet. After Puja, a delicious feast is held.

It is observed that if Nag-Panchami is celebrated every year with devotion and gaiety, then snakes bestow the person with good health, wealth and happiness. However, if snakes are unhappy or angry, they make you sick and no medicine can heal your from pain or suffering.
