The 16 day period starting from the Purnima of Bhadrapada and ending on the Amavasya of the Krishna Paksha of Ashvin is known as the Pitru Paksha meaning the fortnight of fathers. In this duration, people perform activities to let the souls of their parents and ancestors rest in peace. Charity, Havan and various other rituals are performed during this period. This year, the Shradh will start on September 5 and end on September 19.

How to do the Pind Daan during the Pitru Paksha?

According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, if there is no son in the family of the deceased ancestor, the Pind Daan can be done by the nephew or grandson of the departed ones. 

• Three activities hold immense importance in the Shradh. They are Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Brahman Bhoj, respectively. Pind Daan is considered to be of paramount important as it is believed that the souls cannot attain moksha without the Pind Daan. During the Pind Daan, keep the Janeu on your right shoulder and offer the Pinds made up of rice, cow’s milk, sugar, and honey to your ancestors.
• Mix black sesame, barley, and Kusha in water and offer it to your ancestors. It is believed that it quenches the thirst of your departed ancestors.
• Perform the rituals at Gaya or at Prayag. If you are unable to do so, you can do it at your home.
• It is believed that your ancestors can come to you in any form during the period of Shradh. Therefore, you must not turn away anyone who comes to you.
• One should follow Brahmacharya during the Pitru Paksha and also refrain from consuming any kind of meat and alcohol during this period.

It is believed that performing 10 types of charitable deeds during the Pitru Paksha helps the souls of the deceased ancestors to attain peace. Apart from these, it is believed that feeding animals is also of significance during the period of Shradh.

All incarnations and forms of Lord Vishnu are venerated on this day. An important facet of this festival is the Anant Sootra. Any thread made up of either silk or cotton is tied to Lord Vishnu’s hand. The thread must have 14 knots in it, and only then it can be considered as the Anant Sootra. It is believed that Lord Vishnu protects and blesses anyone who ties the Anant Sootra on this day. People also observe fast on Anant Chaudas in order to get blessed with a healthy offspring. It is believed that the festival of Anant Chaturdashi and Anant Chaturdashi fast started at the time of Mahabharata. When the Pandavas lost to the Kauravas, they were banished from their kingdom. Onam is a festival of devotion and has immense religious importance associated with it. It is firmly believed that King Mahabali (the ruler of all the three lokas- dharti loka, patal loka, and swarga loka) visits his people on this day. In order to welcome him and honour his arrival, the Keralites celebrate the day with full enthusiasm and devotion. Puja is performed as per the rites and rituals on this day. People clean their homes and decorate them. On the main gate of the house, a beautiful carpet of flowers is laid to welcome the great king Mahabali. Some people also use the mixture of beaten rice and water to make decorative figures on the entrance of the house. Onam Sadhya is one of the most important feature of this festival, without which the festival is not considered complete. A grand feast is organised in Onam Sadhya. Approximately twenty six delicacies are prepared to be served on banana leaves as per the rituals. Apart from this, a number of games and cultural events are held to celebrate the festival in the most grand way possible.
