1. Ahoi Ashtami is celebrated eight days prior to Diwali on Krishna Paksha Ashtami. On this day, mothers fast for their children and seek blessings from Goddess Ahoi for their long life and well-being.
2. In order to keep this fast, women wake up before sunrise and begin the process of worship. For the Puja, any image of Goddess Ahoi which has eight corners can be used as a reference to the fact that the festival falls on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha. 
3. In the image of Goddess Ahoi, a picture of Sei should also be there. Sei is a spiny mammal that sits close to Goddess Ahoi. 
4. The process of worship should begin by the evening. After the altar has been purified with Holy Ganga water, sprinkle some wheat flour on the altar. 
5. Put a Kalash near the image of the Goddess. The edges of the Kalash should be smeared with turmeric powder and the stout should be filled with grass shoots, preferably of Sarai Seenka. Listen to the story of Goddess Ahoi read by the eldest woman of the family followed by offering food and money to the Goddess.
6. Women break the fast by giving Argha to the stars or the moon, as per their preference. This marks the end of the fast and the festival of Ahoi Ashtami

LEGENDS AND FOLKLORES

There are many legends associated with Karwa Chauth, most of them being interlinked to each other. The story which is usually referred to as the most influential one is the story of a woman called Karwa who saved her husband from death by fighting Yam, lord of death, himself. Other legends associated with this festival are that of ‘Queen Veervati’, ‘Mahabharata’ and ‘Satyavan and Savitri’. People from different parts of the country subscribe to different legends and alter their rituals accordingly.

RITUALS

There are many rituals associated with this festival which is celebrated with much enthusiasm and fervor amongst the married women. Women begin their preparations in advance by buying items of shringar, ethnic wear and jewellery, henna, decorated puja thalis and matthi. Sargi is one of the most essential part of Karwa Chauth as it is given to the woman by her mother-in-law. It includes almonds, fenia, sweet matthi amongst other things. Fenia is an important part of the pre-dawn meal that a woman eats before starting her fast. Women begin their fast before the sunrise and break it at the moonrise in the evening without eating or drinking anything during the day. This fast is a true citation of the strength and will that a woman holds. At dusk, women break their fast by worshipping the moon and praying for the long life and well-being of their husband. After the prayers and rituals are over, women break their fast by eating the first bite from their husband’s hands, thus concluding the festival. 

PUJA VIDHI FOR KARWA CHAUTH

1. Decorate the Puja venue with mud (Kahia Matti) and establish the idol of Goddess Parvati on the altar.
2. Listen to the Karwa Chauth story, preferably by an older woman.
3. Decorate and fill your Puja Thali with Karwa, roli, diya, rice, small pot of water and Matthi.
4. Sit with other women forming a circle and pass the Thalis around while singing the traditional song.
5. Seek the blessings of the eldest member of the family while giving your Thali to them.
6. When the moon has risen, look at your husband through the sieve followed by looking at the moon the same way.
7. Thereafter, the husband can break his wife’s fast by feeding her sweets and water.

Sharad Purnima: a harvest festival

Celebrated in the lunar month of the Hindu Calendar- Ashwin, Sharad Purnima is basically the worshipping of Purnima or the full moon day in the Shukla Paksha of October. This harvest festival marks the end of monsoon and symbolises the onset of Autumn (Sharad). It’s also known by the names ‘Kojagiri Purnima’, ‘Kumar Purnima’, and ‘Raas Purnima’

in the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of Ashvin month. According to certain astrologers, moon and earth are the closest to each other on this day. Due to this phenomenon, the rays of the moon are believed to carry therapeutic properties which are potent to cure our ailments and fill our life with positivity.

Purnima Tithi is beginning on October 15, 2016 at 01:25:38 pm and ending on October 16, 2016 at 09:53:04 am

Sharad Purnima 2016: Rituals To Be Followed

1. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Indra on Erawat Elephant (White Elephant) are worshipped on this day.
2. Chant the below mentioned mantra during the Lakshmi Pujan: “Om Lakshmaya Namah”
3. For Indra Pujan, chant the Mantra: “Indraya Namah”
4. Kheer (sweet rice porridge) should be especially made for this Puja and should be kept in a silver vessel.
5. The Kheer should be kept under direct moonlight, and should only be consumed the next day.
6. All the idols of Gods should be cleaned and dressed up in new clothes on this day.
7. The Puja should be carried out with flowers and Diyas.
8. A Sharad Purnima fast is also observed on this day and it shall be broken only by reciting the story of Sharad Purnima.
9. During the time of recitation, keep the Kalash filled with water.
10. Along with this, a glass filled with wheat and bowls containing Roli (vermilion) and rice should be kept.
11. It’s important to stay awake all night on the day of the Pujan to please Maa Laxmi and Lord Indra.

Significance of Sharad Purnima

1. On this day, mothers observe fast for the well-being of their children.
2. It is believed that those who perform this Pooja get blessed by Goddess Lakshmi. Due to this the fast observed on this day is to gain wealth.
3. Sharad Purnima is also considered very auspicious for buying any new vehicle.

Lord Krishna performed Rasleela on this day, which popularised Sharad Purnima by another name, ‘Raas Purnima’.
