Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is one of the biggest festivals of Sikh community. It is celebrated all over India with great fervor and joy. People of different communities celebrate the day for different reasons. It is also greatly celebrated as the beginning of new year in many parts of South India. Generally, Baisakhi occurs on the date of April 13, but once in every 36 years, it is celebrated on the date of April 14. Vaisakhi is full of vibrancy and colors.
Significance Of Baisakhi
Baisakhi is having a great spiritual significance for the Sikh community. It is a time which reminds the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh. Vaisakhi is considered important because Khalsa was originated on this day by the tenth Guru of Sikhs i.e. Guru Gobind Singh in the year 1699.
Khalsa is the symbol of purity and bravery in Sikh community. It is associated with their spiritual feelings. To become the member of Khalsa, one has to follow all the rules and regulations of the religion. Also, they have to wear the five signs of Khalsa.

- Kesh (uncut hair)
- Kangha (wooden comb)
- Kada (metal bangle)
- Kirpan (sword)
- Kachha (cotton briefs
Celebrations Of Vaisakhi
Baisakhi is celebrated by performing the traditional Bhangra and Gidda by all the men and women. They sing songs like ‘Jatta Ayi Baisakhi’, which show the significance of Baisakhi. The whole atmosphere gets filled with happiness and joy.
All the devotees gather in Gurudwara and read out the holy book 'Guru Granth Sahib' after giving it a ceremonial bath with milk and water. They also thank god for providing luck and prosperity.
A Day For The Farmers
Baisakhi is also greatly celebrated by the farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. They pay homage and thank the Almighty for the abundant harvest. They also pray for the suitable harvesting season in the future.
Different Baisakhi Melas (fairs) are also organized at different places to celebrate the festival with great fun and joy. These Melas also act as the major crowd puller.
The other important occasions which are celebrated on the day of Baisakhi are: Foundation of Arya Samaj by Swami Dayanand Saraswati and attainment of enlightenment or Nirvana by Gautam Buddha.
