Gathering At Sangam On Paush Purnima
It is a popular ritual followed by one and all to take a holy dip in the water on the day of Paush Purnima. One of the most famous places for taking this holy dip is Sangam at Allahabad. People across the country gather to this spot, which is the Sangam (conjunction) of the holy rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. As per Hindu beliefs, one who takes bath in the holy river on Purnima day is rid of all his/her sins and mistakes. The places which are famous for Paush Purnima celebration other than Allahabad are Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain to name a few.
Once the devotees are done with the holy dip, they next perform the Surya Puja (worshipping of Sun God). A small idol of Lord Shiva is made out of mud near the river bank and Puja is performed to the idol and Sun, while chanting Mantras. Once the Puja comes to an end, Prasad (holy food) is distributed among the devotees present there. This day is considered holy for donations.
