The birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is celebrated as Budh Purnima. It was on the day of Vaishakha Purnima that Lord Buddha was born, he acquired Knowledge (Gyan) and gained salvation (Parinirvana). This is the reason why, Buddhist followers celebrate this day as Budh Purnima. Vaishakha or Budh Purnima is also known by the name of Buddha Jayanti, Vesak and Hanamatsuri. As per Hindu religious beliefs, Gautam Buddha is the ninth incarnation of God Vishnu. Therefore, it is a holy festival for Hindus as well.

Life of Gautam Buddha and His Preaching

Lord Buddha is believed to be the greatest man in the world for his non-violence and humanist beliefs. He propagated Bauddha Dharma Darshan everywhere. Since childhood, Mahatma Buddha has love and compassion for the people who were miserable and suffering. Troubled by the sorrows in the world, he left his wife, son and all the worldly pleasures behind and went to the forest. During that period, he performed a long rigorous tenacity (Tapasya) and obtained Knowledge (Gyan) at an age of 29 years under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya.

Thus, he laid the foundation of Buddhist religion, and told the path for human well-being in his preachings. Among his preachings, he spoke about 5 things prominently:

1. Do not do violence with any creature.
2. Never steal anything.
3. Stay away from lust and misdeeds.
4. Never speak lies.
5. Do not consume intoxicated things or drugs (Nashile Padarth).

Festival of Budh Purnima and Its Rituals

Budh Purnima is celebrated in many countries worldwide including India, China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Vietnam. On this occasion, Buddhist followers perform several religious activities, like:

• Followers of Buddhism from around the world come to Bodhgaya.

Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya is highly propitious festival which is widely celebrated by Hindu and Jain people. Bathing in Ganga river, donating things, performing Yagna, etc on this auspicious day results in sacred rewards as well as eliminates all sins. If this day falls on Monday and in Rohini Nakshatra, then it reaps highly great fruits.

This Tritiya is also known as Sarva Siddhi Muhurat. It is the day when auspicious activities like marriage, Grah Pravesh, etc. can be commenced without looking at Panchang. It is also an auspicious Muhurat for beginning a new task, business, or anything, buying new things especially gold, etc. According to Puranas, Pind Daan offered to ancestors on this day is highly propitious.

• On this day, one should buy things like gold, silver, clay pots (Mitti ke Bartan), clothes, Shankh, Sugar, Turmeric (Haldi), Peacock feathers, etc for good fortune.
• Cow represents good health and wealth. So, on this auspicious day, one should worship this sacred being with utmost devotion.
• People pay reverence to Goddess Mahalakshmi who is considered as the bestower of wealth and prosperity.
• Doors to God Badrinarayana opens on this day, so one should offer Tulsidal (multiple tulsi leaves tied together) in water and worship the God will utmost and pure devotion.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya celebrated?

There are many stories mentioned in religious scriptures about why Akshaya Tritiya is of great significance.

• Parashurama Jayanti

Lord Parshuram was born on Akshaya Tritiya, therefore, the day is celebrated as Parshuram Jayanti. He is believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Initially named as Ramabhadra, he was given the holy responsibility of releasing Mothers and Goddesses from demons. For this task, he was given a weapon called Parashu by Lord Shiva himself, thus earning the name Parshuram.

• Mahabharata

The holy day of Akshaya Tritiya has a sacred connection with Mahabharata as well. It is believed that Satyug (the Golden Age), commenced from this day onwards. Also, the greatest Acharya of Sanatan Dharma started writing the epic Mahabharata on this auspicious day. It is also believed that Sun God gifted the Akshaya Patra (an enchanted pot which had a never ending supply of food) to the Pandavas on the same day of Akshaya Tritiya.

Astrological significance of Akshaya Tritiya

According to Vedic Astrology, there are three and a half Akshaya Tithis in a year. Among them, Akshaya Tritiya is considered to be the best and supreme Tithi and it occurs in Vaishakha month. It is also believed that the luminaries, Sun and Moon, are at their extreme brightness on this day, which signifies a highly favourable period for performing auspicious activities.
