Although the Kanya Puja is done on both Eighth Day (Ashtami) and Ninth Day (Navami) of Sharad Navratri, but the Kanya Puja performed on the Eighth Day of Sharad Navratri is of greater importance.

The auspiscious time to worship Maa Mahagauri is between 06:25am - 09:15am and 10:40am - 12:06pm. Chant the below Mantra:
महागौरी प्रार्थना मंत्र
श्वेते वृषे समारुढ़ा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः।
महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्महादेवप्रमोददा।।
Kanya Pujan & It’s Benefits
Girls who age between 2 to10 years are worshiped on the day of Ashtami.
1. Keep in mind that the age of girls should be from 2 to 10 years.
2. Worship the young girls in ascending order as per their age.
- 2 year old girl - कौमाटर्यै नमः
- 3 year old girl - त्रिमूर्तये नमः
- 4 year old girl - कल्याण्यै नमः
- 5 year old girl - रोहिण्य नमः
- 6 year old girl - कालिकायै नमः
- 7 year old girl - चण्डिकार्य नमः
- 8 year old girl - शम्भव्यै नमः
- 9 year old girl - दुर्गायै नमः
- 10 year old girl - सुभद्रायै नमः
3. Offer new clothes to all 9 girls and wash their feet with pure water.
4. Put Tilak on their forehead while chanting the Mantra.
5. Offer the best food you can serve and including sweets.
Note: Perform the Kanya Puja with 2 girls if you are not able to manage all the nine.
Forms Of Goddess Mahagauri
As per belief, Goddess Parvati did tough penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband, due to which her skin color turned black. Lord Shiva got impressed by this dedicated penance of Maa Parvati and appeared in front of her. Maa Parvati was then bathed with Holy Water of Gangas by Lord Shiva himself. Because of which the skin color of Maa Parvati turned white and Maa Mahagauri name was given to her. Goddess Mahagauri mounts on ox and wears white colored clothes.
On this day, wear sky blue and offer coconut to the Goddess.
