Friendship’s Day Special: Is Your Friend Trustworthy?

Friendship’s day: 4th August 2013

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: "What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” ― C.S. Lewis

On this Friendship’s Day look back and....

Recall that first day in a new school, the shy and nervous you entered the class with a heavy heart and an equally heavy bag. The first guy or a girl, who came to sat beside you will remain in your heart forever. While you took time to open up, that friend made you feel like the entire school belonged to you. And, before you knew it, you were a part of the gang. That friend who stood right outside the window to tell you the right answers in an exam. That friend who introduced you to hairstyles; the one who pushed you to confess your crush. School friendship; you are introduced to yourself; the self that you didn’t know existed. Those good old lovely days, when life was all about useless fights, long chats and dreams.

“Stay is a charming word in a friend's vocabulary.” ― Amos Bronson Alcott

Love Vs Friendship

“You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most. I treasure each side, just as I have treasured our life together.” ― Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook

Love and friendship are two worlds which more than often cross paths. These exist peacefully and sometimes blend to form a bond which transcends life and what lies beyond it. The moment when you see a friend but differently this time; that is the point which blends the two worlds together. Suddenly your world begins to change. What is love but friendship wearing a different color. The color which paints your dreams and let you fly high in the blue sky. The road also goes the other way round. Sometimes, you find a best friend in your spouse. The journey from falling in love to become the best friend of that love is equally beautiful. Finding love in your friend and a true friend in the love of your life is a true blessing. Let the Lord bestow all of us with this blessing; Let Love and the Friendship never die.

The immortal Friendship of Krishna and Sudama

When we first heard of this legendary tale of friendship in school we had long known friendship by then. Two childhood friends, Krishna and Sudama grew up to be King and a poor Brahmin respectively. Though Sudama was a learned Brahmin yet fate is something even he could not escape. He lived a life of a poor Brahmin with his wife and children. He could not earn enough to feed his family. One day his wife told him to go to his friend Krishna and ask for help. After a lot of contemplation he agreed to go. After a long and tiring journey, he reached the gates of Dwarka, Lord Krishna’s Kingdom. He was ridiculed and mocked when he told the gate keepers that he was Lord Krishna’s friend. When the news of his arrival reached the Lord, he went running to receive his friend. Krishna welcomed Sudhama and he stayed there for two days. In those two days, Krishna showered immense love and care over Sudama. Now came the time to go back home, but he had yet not done what he came to do. He didn’t know how to tell his wife that he came back empty handed. After accepting a farewell, he embarked on his journey back home. When he reached his village he saw a huge palace in place of his hut. His wife emerged out of that palace and told him about the magical transformation. He smiled to himself and cursed himself for not understanding the mischievous ways of Lord Krishna sooner.

Getting without having to ask for it, is the theme of this story of friendship. To understand what has not been said is true friendship. As they say, friendship is all about the comfortable silence.

Prithviraj Chauhan and Chand Bardai

The friendship between Prithviraj Chauhan and Chand Bardai is another legend of friendship which has survived the test of time. Prithviraj was a Hindu Chauhan King of Ajmer and Delhi. Chand Bardai was his best friend and a poet at his court. Prithviraj Raso is a written proof of their friendship that did not die even after their death. As per the legend, when Muhammad Ghori defeated Prithviraj Chauhan, he blinded Prithviraj. His friend, Chand Bardai came in disguise and befriended Ghori to take revenge. He went to his friend and they together formed a plan to kill Ghori. It is believed that Prithvi was a very good archer could aim his target just by following sounds. Ghori wanted to see his archery skills. Chand Bardai sang a composition which targeted Muhammad Ghori. The composition was - "Char bans, chaubis gaj, angul ashta praman, Ta upar sultan hai, Chuke mat Chauhan." Understanding the exact position of Ghori, Prithviraj historically claimed his enemy’s life. After that, they killed each other to prevent being killed by Ghori’s soldiers.

Chand Bardai’s words became Prithviraj Chauhan’s eyes and accomplished the impossible together. Lived together and died together.

Well, these are the tales that we carefully picked from the treasure of past. Modern day tales are not any less heroic. On this Friendship’s Day, let us imbibe the true essence of friendship, camaraderie and companionship. Friendship that knows no boundaries; friendship sets you free.

"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's hand. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”
