In Hinduism, there are a number of fasts and rituals based on the infinite love of the divine couple, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hartalika Teej is one of these fasts. It is celebrated on the third day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) during the month of Bhadrapada. It is also known as Badi Teej. The fast is observed specially in the regions of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. It is believed that Goddess Parvati was the first one to observe this fast in order to get Lord Shiva as her husband.

Importance of Hartalika Teej
It is believed that whosoever venerates the divine couple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is blessed by Goddess Parvati herself. According to the legends, it was on this day that a friend of Goddess Parvati abducted her and took her into a thick forest in order to help her. This is where Hartalika Teej gets its name from, as Harit means to abduct and Aalika means friend. It is believed that anyone who observes this fast with unswerving devotion is bound to get a happy married life.
How to observe the Hartalika Teej fast?
Hartalika Teej is celebrated on the third day of the brighter fortnight during the month of Bhadrapada. This date holds immense importance for the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are made by the devotees by using sand, and are worshipped vehemently by them. Consumption of any kind of cereal or water is strictly prohibited during the fast, and only fruits are used as the prasad.
The worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is done during the night of the Hartalika Teej. The fast is concluded on the next day after all the Puja rituals are completed.
