Lord Ganesha is honored on the religious day of Vinayaka Ganesha Chaturthi.

Today is Vinayaki Shree Ganesh Chaturthi, a grand day when Lord Ganesha is glorified by all the ‘Ganapatyas’ (devotees of Ganesha). Son of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati, Ganesha is known as the God of success and thus, worshiped before making any new beginning. Being the lord of knowledge, wisdom, education, and wealth, Ganesha is counted among the five prime Hindu Gods, whose idolism is equivalent to Panchayatana Puja. This Puja involves worshiping of Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha, Surya, and Durga. On this sacred day of Vinayaka Ganesh Chaturthi, let’s unfold some facts about the Lord of the day.

Birth Of Ganesha

Once Maa Parvati was going for a bath. As she didn't want anybody to disturb her, thus, she told Nandi (Shiva's bull) to make sure that no one enters inside. Faithful Nandi was following Parvati's order sincerely, but suddenly Shiva arrived. As Nandi was very faithful to the Lord, he allowed him to go inside. This act of Nandi annoyed Parvati and she realized that there was no one loyal to her. She then took turmeric paste and created an idol of a child, after which she restored life into it. Parvati named the child as Ganesha and called him as her loyal son.

Story Of The Elephant Head

The next time when Parvati was going to take bath, she told Ganesha to guard the entrance and not to allow anyone to pass in. Being the loyal son, Ganesha was performing his duty. At the same time, Shiva arrived there, but was stopped by Ganesha at the door only. This annoyed the Lord as he wasn't aware that Ganesha was his own son. Shiva was offended to such an extent that he decided to fight with Ganesha. In extreme anger, the Lord thrashed Ganesha's head.

When Parvati came out and saw the whole act, she got enraged and decided to end the whole universe. She told Brahma that she will destroy the world, if his son's life was not restored back. Shiva got calmed by then and assured Parvati that he will bring Ganesha back to life. He ordered Lord Brahma, to bring the head of the first creature he meets that has its head toward North direction. While searching for such a creature, Brahma found the head of a powerful elephant. He returned back with it and gave it to Shiva. The Lord then placed elephant's head onto Ganesha's body. While giving back Ganesha's life, Shiva declared him as his son.
