Kartik Purnima: Associated Mythological Legends

Many mythological legends are associated with this auspicious day. One such Legend suggests that a demon named Tripurasura performed austerity in Prayagraj for a period of one lakh years so as to increase his powers. As a result of the negative effects of his meditation, human beings and the divine too were frightened. In such a situation, the deities decided to send celestial nymphs so as to break his austerity, but he continued with meditation, which he completed successfully. Ultimately, Lord Brahma had to appear in front of him and ordered him to ask for a boon.

The demon Tripura asked for the boon of immortality and said that he will not be killed by any human on divine being, to which Brahma had to agree. Upon the fulfillment of this boon, Tripura’s powers started to increase and day by day he started tormenting all the Gods and Goddesses. After gaining control over the Devlok or heaven, he started to climb the Kailash mountain, Lord Shiva’s abode, because of which the ferocious Shiva called out Tripura for a dual. Blinded by his arrogance and power, Tripura decided to fight Mahadev and the fight continued for a period of many days. Afterwards, Lord Shiva took the help of Lord Brahma and Vishnu so as to win over Tripura. Beliefs state that the day on which all the three Lords granted salvation to the demon Tripura happened to be Kartik Purnima because of which lamps are lit all over the Earth and heaven on this day.

Tulsi Vivah: Associates Mythological Legends

It is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had a third son, who is said to be the beholder of demonic instincts. He believed that his position was over all the Gods and Goddesses. Named Jalandhar, he was married to a lady named Vrinda, who happened to be one of the most prominent devotees of Lord Vishnu. He would repeatedly torment the Gods with his supreme powers, but the deities failed to kill Jalandhar because of Vrinda’s devotion. At last, the Gods approached Lord Vishnu to put an end to Jalandhar and their plight.

While offering a solution, Vishnu gave the advice of robbing Vrinda’s chastity. To do so, he appeared infront of Vrinda as Jalandhar and disrobed her chastity. Only then, all the Gods were able to put an end to Jalandhar. When the innocent Vrinda got to know about this, she cursed Lord Vishnu. Immediately, all the Gods approached Vrinda and pleaded in front of her to withdraw the curse, to which Vrinda obligated immediately. But Lord Vishnu took the form of a stone to attain atonement. This stone is called Shaligram.

Afterwards, Vrinda committed Sati with her husband, Jalandhar and a Tusli plant emerged out of her ashes. Not only this, Lord Vishnu never gave up his redemption and gave the highest status to the Tulsi plant and declared that he won't consume any meal without Tulsi. Afterwards, the Gods revered Vrinda for committing Sati and commenced her marriage with Shaligram. The day on which Tulsi Vivah was commenced happened to be Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which is why Tulsi marriage ceremony is organized every year during Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Chhath Puja: Rituals and Traditions

The festivals which find a place in the Hindu Sanatan Dharma are significant in their own ways. The various customs and traditions associated with them give birth to their relevance. In the same vein, there are also some rites and rituals performed on the day of Chhath Puja, which adds to its grandeur and makes it different from the rest. There are four main highlights of this festival which are - Nahay Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya.

  • Nahay Khay is the first day of this festival. The word Nahai Khay stands for the practice of keeping your mind and body pious during this Puja. On this day, the practice of cleaning one’s household and courtyard is also observed. One should also keep in mind to take an early bath and consume Sattvik food thereby housing positive thoughts in mind.
  • The second highlight of this festival is Kharna. It takes place during the second day of Chhath. Natives observe fasts on this day. The nature of this fast is quite strict as natives do not even consume a single drop while undergoing this Vrat. however, when the fast is broken, the ritual of ingesting jaggery pudding, bread(roti) mixed with clarified butter (ghee) and fruits is followed.
  • On the third day of Chhath Puja (Kartik Shukla Shashthi), Arghya in the form of water is offered to Surya Dev during sunset. This ritual is called Sandhya Arghya. Earlier in the evening before the Arghya is offered, the vessel is decorated with fruits, sweets(ladoos) made of rice and other things in a bamboo basket. After its successful commemoration, natives who have observed the fast and all of their family members make the offering. Meanwhile, the same water is used to worship Chhathi Maiya later.
  • On the last day of Chhath festival, the tradition of offering Usha (morning) Arghya is followed by natives. On this day, Arghya is offered to the Sun God during the early morning hours. Natives reach the banks of rivers and then offer Arghya to the rising Sun. After this, Chhath Mata is venerated and the longevity of progeny along with the prosperity of the household is sought from the Goddess.

Natives have been celebrating the auspicious festival of Bhai Dooj since ancient times, as proven by the story below. This tale tells us about Lord Krishna and a demon named Narakasura.

Once upon a time, a demon Narakasura had been terrorizing the people. To save themselves, everyone went to Lord Krishna for help, who immediately agreed and killed the demon. According to the story, Lord Krishna returned to Dwarka on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the Krishna month after killing the demon. His sister, Subhadra, welcomed him back by offering him fruits and sweets, and illuminating the house with lamps. She applied tilak on her brother’s forehead and prayed for his long life. Diwali and Narak Chaturdashi Coincides On The Same Day!

Know Diwali & Narak Chaturdashi Puja Muhurat & attain the blessings of Maa Laxmi & Lord Ganesha.

Diwali is occurring on 27 October this year. This festival is celebrated throughout the country with much pomp and show. All the followers of Hinduism eagerly await this celebration and fill the dark night with the light of lamps (Diyas) and their excitement. Deepavali is another name for this festival, so is Prakash Utsav due to the bright illumination of the night.

Mythology states that on this day, Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after killing Ravana and completing his exile (Vanvas) of 14 years. To commemorate this happiness, people light diyas in and around their homes, reminiscing of the natives of Ayodhaya, who did the same, centuries ago in welcome of Lord Rama, Lady Sita, and Lord Lakshman. Deepavali is the festival of victory of good over evil, a day of positivity. Devotees pay homage to the Gods and Goddesses to remove the negativity from their lives.

Diwali falls on the day of Amavasya (New Moon), i.e., when there is no moon in the sky. In the Kartik Month, during the Pradosh Kaal of Amavasya, we celebrate Deepavali and worship Goddess Mahalakshmi. If the Amavasya Tithi continues for two days and Pradosh Kaal occurs only during the second day, Diwali is celebrated on that day. There are many other beliefs associated with the commemoration of Deepavali, but this one is most prevalent.

Things to Remember During Laxmi Puja

During Diwali, one of the major festivals of Hinduism; devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi. Additionally, we also pay homage to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati on this day. People clean their houses and places of worship because they believe that the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi herself descends to Earth on this day and blesses her devotees. Some important things to remember during Lakshmi Puja are:

  • Like every festival, bathing and meditating early in the morning have high importance, on Diwali as well.
  • Next, you should clean your place of worship at home.
  • Sprinkle Gangajal or Gomutra around your house to cleanse it.
  • Chant the Gayatri Mantra or ‘ऊँ नम: शिवाय/ūm̐ nama: śivāya’ to purify your heart.
  • Draw a beautiful rangoli and place diyas on it.
  • After cleaning your place of worship, spread a red cloth and establish the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.

  • On this day, it is auspicious for the family members to stay together.

Mythological Legend Related To Kali Chaudas (Narak Chaturdashi)

According to the legend, a demon named Narakasura had terrorized the Gods and Sages with his powers and took sixteen thousand women as his hostage. Troubled by the terror, all the Gods and Saints approached the divine Lord Krishna and asked for his help. Listening to their plight, the Lord assured everyone regarding the elimination of the demon.

According to a curse, Narkasur would die at the hands of a woman. Therefore, Shri Krishna, with the help of his wife Satyabhama; killed Narakasura on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month and freed sixteen thousand women from his captivity. Later on, these women were hailed as the “Patraniyan” of the Lord. After Narkasur was killed, natives celebrated the occasion by lighting diyas in their homes on the Amavasya during the month of Kartik.

Thus, if the thirteenth day (trayodashi tithi) falls during the sunrise, then that day is Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. On this day, people also do Deep Daan to Lord Yamaraj, God of Death.

Dhanteras 2019: Things to Remember

Devotees of Hinduism pray to Lord Kuber, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Dhanvantri on Dhanteras and wish for peace, prosperity, and health in life. However, one should never sit for worship out of greed on this day. Instead, your thoughts should be of helping the needy with the money you have, and working towards the betterment of society. In fact, people believe that Goddess Lakshmi (often an allegory for wealth) will enter your home only if your heart is pure and you hold no malice for anyone. If you harbour any ill-will in your mind and have such impious thoughts, then you will not be able to attain Lakshmi - both wealth and the blessings of the Goddess).

Dhanteras Puja Rituals

  • Wake up early on Dhanteras, and after being done with your morning rituals, wear clean clothes. You should also clean your house.
  • Worship the God of Health, Lord Dhanvantri with shodashopachara. Also, pay homage to the Gods and Goddess of wealth – Lakshmi and Kuber with utmost devotion.
  • Every member of the family should participate in this puja. Distribute the prasad after completion.
  • You should light a diya (lamp) on the main door of your home, in the evening.
  • Also, worship Goddess Lakshmi with complete rituals in the evening of Dhantrayodashi.

Mythological Legend Behind Ahoi Ashtami

Let’s read in detail the popular legend associated with this festival. A long time back, a moneylender and his wife had seven sons. Few days before Diwali in the month of Kartik, the wife thought of renovating the house, and went to the forest to dig up some soil. While digging with a spade, a young porcupine got accidentally killed by the wife, and cursed her to face a similar fate. As a result, all her kids died within a year, leaving her devastated.

Unable to tolerate the pain, both husband and wife went to the final pilgrimage on foot, and walked until they were unconscious. At this moment, a celestial announcement was made, in which the couple was told to go back, serve the cow and worship Goddess Ahoi. After hearing such words, they came back, and on the eighth day during the month of Kartik, the wife drew a porcupine and her kids on the wall, and performed the Ahoi Ashtami fast with devotion. This appeased the Goddess, who eliminated her sin and blessed her with fertility.
