Legend behind Kartik Purnima

According to mythology, in ancient times there was a demon named Tripurasur. He performed a difficult religious austerity at Prayagraj. His fierceness and dedication in worshipping his Lord made the living beings as well as Devtas scared. In such a scenario, Devtas had to plan to create some disturbance in his prayers. Beautiful fairies or apsaras were sent but in vain. Lord Brahma, being happy with such tough prayer, visited him and presented him with a boon.

The boon he asked was that - I must not die by the hands of devtas or humans. Since he was blessed with the same, he was fearless and started hurting other beings. His overconfidence made him attack even Kailash and lead to a battle between him and Lord Shiva. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu helped Lord Shiva in annihilating the powerful beast.
