Month of Sawan hold special significance in Hindu religion, especially for worshipping Lord Shiva, as this month is dedicated to him. According to Hindu Calendar, the fifth month of the Hindu year, which begins with Chaitra, is stated as the month of Shravan. According to Western calendar, the month of Sawan falls in July or August. The arrival of this month occurs during rainy season. This is the time when nature graces the lands with lots of greenery. And Sawan or Shravana month is also the time when taking a bath and doing Rudra Abhishek of Lord Shiva is of great importance.

Sawan Somwar Vrat and Puja Vidhi


The whole month of Sawan is not less than any celebration for the devotees of Lord Bholenath. Special prayers are offered to Lord Shiva as well as fasting is performed on every Monday in the month of Sawan. The devotees of Lord Bholenath line up to get a glimpse of Jyotirlingas and Shivalayas in the country. Take a look at the following steps to worship Lord Shiva and find more about fasting rituals on Monday.

  • Wake up early in the morning and take a bath.
  • After that, anoint Lord Shiva with water and milk.
  • Then, apply Sandalwood Tilak and offer him Bael leaves, Datura, fruits, flowers, etc.
  • Light a Ghee or oil lamp.
  • Chant Mangal Aarti after reciting Sawan Somwar Vrat story and Shiv Chalisa.
  • Worship Lord Shiva in the morning and evening on the day of fasting.
  • Open your fast and eat in the evening after completing Shiv Puja.


Why Month of Sawan is Dear to Lord Shiva?


Vrats performed during the month of Sawan are very dear to Lord Shiva. There are many stories in this context. According to a legend, Mata Parvati kept on fasting during the month of Sawan to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased with her austerity, Lord Shiva married her.

According to an another story, it is also believed in this month, Lord Shiva manifested on earth to meet his in-laws, where he was welcomed with a Jalabhishek. So, as per beliefs, every year Lord Shiva comes to his in-laws' house in the month of Sawan. This is also the best time to get grace of the lord.

Significance of Sawan Somvar Vrat


In the month of Sawan, devotees worship Lord Shiva with reverence, and receive his blessings. It is also believed that women perform this fast for the fulfillment of their wishes to get a good life partner. At the same time, boon of longevity is also received by worshipping Lord Shiva and fasting on this day.
