Nag Panchami Legends

According to the Puranas, these 8 nags are regarded to be the foremost among the others. These are divided into 4 subcategories like the Brahmins (Anant & Kulik), Kshatriya ( Vasuki and Shankhpal), Vaishya ( Takshak and Mahapadma), and the last Shudra ( Padma and Karkata).

The snakes are considered to be of two types viz. Divya and Bhaum. Vasuki and Takshak, etc are the Divya snakes who are believed to carry the burden of the earth. In medicine it is believed that poison is the cure for poison but there is no alternative cure for the poison emitted by these type of snakes.
Also, Nag Panchami is an auspicious event to get rid of Kal Sarp Dosh. If a person is having all the planets lying between Rahu and Ketu, then the person is said to be suffering from Kaal sarp dosha. Flowing 11 coconuts in river is considered as a very effective remedy for kal sarp dosh in astrology.
