Ganga Dussehra is a ten day festival which celebrates the arrival of river Ganga on earth. It was this pious day when Ganga descended from heaven to earth. For this reason, Ganga Dussehra is also known as Gangavataran, meaning arrival of river Ganga. According to the Hindu Calendar, the festival commences with Amavasya and ends on the Dasami Tithi. Though the festival is celebrated throughout the country, but the real celebrations are seen in Bihar, Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. Reason behind this is quite simple, the holy river Ganga flows through these places.

Ganga – The Most Sacred River

There is no doubt about the fact that not one, but many rivers are treated as holy in India. However, when it comes to the holiest river, Ganga is the answer. In the name Ganga Dussehra, Ganga signifies the holy river and Dussehra/Dushara is made from the combination of words ‘Dus’ and ‘Hara’. Here 'Dus' refers to ‘ten’ and 'Hara' refers to ‘defeat’. Therefore, it is said that on this auspicious festival, one can get freedom from 10 sins or evils, by worshiping the holy river Ganga.

Ganga Dussehra Legend

During the ancient period, there lived a King, Sagara, who had two queens. From one wife, he had one son and from the second wife, he had 60,000 sons. Once, the king performed Ashwamedha Yagna (in which a horse is sacrificed). But Lord Indra stole that sacrificial horse, as he was scared of getting dethroned. After stealing the horse, the Lord left it in the Ashram of Rishi Kapila. Concerned about the lost horse, all the 60,000 sons went out in its search and reached Kapila's Ashram. Seeing the horse there, they thought that it was stolen by the Rishi. This enraged Rishi Kapila and he burnt all of them to ashes.

Hearing about the death of his father and other ancestors, Bhagirathi, grandson of King Sagara, wanted to conduct the last rites of them all. Bhagirath tried hard to convince Ganga to descend on earth for the salvation of his ancestors. As he knew that the flow of the river could cause harm to all the species, he asked for someone to check Ganga's flow. For this, he performed Tapasya (penance) and pleased Lord Shiva, who agreed to control flow of the river. Hence, Ganga began its flow from heaven to tangled hair of Lord Shiva, from where it descended on earth. As Ganga was brought to earth by Bhagiratha, thus, it is also known as Bhagirathi.

Religious Rituals Associated With Ganga Dussehra

A number of rituals are associated with Ganga Dussehra celebration. So, what are those rituals? Here they are in the below mentioned points:

• Holy bath is taken in the sacred water of Ganga
• Floating lamps are offered in the holy water of the river
• Diyas filled with Ghee (purified butter) and flowers are offered
• Aarti is performed to honor Goddess Ganga
• Ganga Jal is carried to home by the devotees
• Fast is observed with a belief that Ganga will eradicate all sins

Stay cautious as skin problems, fire injuries and accidents are possible. If position of Ketu is good at the time of birth, interest in religious deeds, going on pilgrimage and inclination toward spirituality, and donation, will increase. 

Taurus: For the natives belonging to zodiac sign Taurus, Ketu will reside in the 11th house. Positioning of Ketu in this house house is considered favorable. Now is the time when you will get success in every endeavor and will power will increase. You will come in contact with rich and powerful people, which will boost up your confidence. This time will prove fortunate for the businessman. For the salaried people, chances of growth will rise and reputation in front of senior officials will increase. Overall, you will make good amount of money and social circle will increase. If position of Ketu is not good in the horoscope, at the time of birth, problems due to elder brother is possible. You may face some financial loss in the situation of indecisiveness, it may also create possibility of some accident. There are possibilities of theft of some precious item like jewelry, car, or money. Take extra care from fire, while working in the kitchen. If the position of Ketu in birth chart is not good and if you are going through the phase of any unfavorable planet, then time is extremely critical, so stay alert. 

Virgo: For the natives of Virgo, Ketu will remain in the seventh house. Avoiding one or two situations, the presence of Ketu in seventh house become the reason for extreme sorrow and conflicts. Awareness toward nation and society will increase. Will of charity will be felt. Overall, this time is good, due to Ketu. Things will improve further, if position of Ketu was good, during birth. 

Scorpio: For Scorpions Ketu will remain in the fifth house. This transit of Ketu will produce mixed results. Your contacts and prestige will increase in society. This situation is also suitable for the financial matters. You will get the support of people. The ability of decisiveness will improve, which means that you will take fast and correct decisions. But, this transit of Ketu is not suitable for the pregnant ladies. They might face some problems related to progeny. Some halt in education is also possible. If Ketu is posited in Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius zodiac signs in your birth chart then threat of fire and mental tensions may rise, so it is favorable to perform Ketu related remedies.

Capricorn: Ketu will reside in 3rd house. This position of Ketu is extremely auspicious. Bravery and courage will rise. You will get name and fame. You will acquire new and senior position. Income will increase and you will get new sources of income. Success in government work is foreseen. People belonging to politics will get fame. You will get immense fame if you are a writer, artist, singer or any belong from any such field. Your efforts will get appreciation. Relations will strengthen with siblings and relatives. Overall, this is a highly good time. 

Aquarius: For the Aquarians, Ketu is in their 2nd house. As a result, tension may develop between you and your family members. You may face wealth loss. Income will also reduce. Keep a check on your words to avoid conflicts. You may make enemies without any reason. Take care of your health, as chances of mouth disease is foreseen. You may have to spend all of a sudden and unnecessarily. Overall, time will test your communication, patience, and courage. 

Pisces: For Pisceans, Ketu will remain in first house (Lagna Bhava). Pisces is considered as exalted sign for Ketu. (Since Ketu doesn’t have its own place in zodiac signs, therefore, the place of Jupiter zodiac signs is given to Ketu, some astrologers consider Sagittarius as exalted and some Pisces, but my personal experience says that Ketu produces the result of exaltation in Pisces.) Therefore, Pisceans will feel extremely energetic, they will get chances of new work, their respect and honour will increase. They will enjoy auspicious events at home. There are strong possibilities of some religious work or religious travelling. So, in totality Ketu will prove to be extremely beneficial for Pisceans.

Note:

Ketu’s results occur all of a sudden, whether good or bad. Follow these below mentioned remedies to minimize the malefic effects of Ketu, if this transit is unfavorable for you. These remedies will also help instrenthing Rahu, if the transit is favorable for you. 

1. 'Om Kem Ketave Namah': Chant this Mantra 17000 times on wednesday. Also, perform its Dashansh Havan with this Mantra.


2. Worship Lord Ganesha to minimize the malefic effects to Ketu. Chant ‘Om Gam Ganpataye Namah’ Mantra 51000 times. This will reduce the negative effects of Ketu and will strengthen its benefic effects.


3. Donate black sesame seeds (Til), black cloth, 7 types of grains, Urad, mustard or sesame oil, iron or steel utensils on every wednesday and saturday.


4. Chanting Mantras yourself will yield highly fruitful results. If you are not able to do it yourself, take the help of any Brahmin and perform the right rituals, after checking the Yoga. 


5. These remedies will yield best results, if performed a week before Ketu transit.

Dhumavati Jayanti is observed on the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Ashtami, during the month of Jyestha, as per the Hindu calendar. This year Dhumavati Jayanti will be celebrated on June 6, 2014.

As per the Hindu mythology, Goddess Dhumavati is an incarnation of Goddess Durga (Shakti). Goddess Dhumavati is believed to be the seventh embodiment of Maa Durga. She is considered to be the most furious form of Goddess Shakti. She is dressed in white clothes. There is a flag hoisted on her chariot which has a picture of a crow. She holds a razor edged weapon in her hand and holds lots of power.

Goddess Dhumavati is also known as ‘Jyeshtha Nakshatra’, as she is related to this particular Nakshatra.

Legend Of Dhumavati Jayanti

The legend is associated with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Once, Mata Parvati asked Lord Shiva the secret of Dhan (meditation). As the Lord was in deep meditation hence, he did not listen to Devi Parvati’s words. Parvati tried finding out the secret, but was unsuccessful with all her possible attempts. Hence, she became so angry, furious and annoyed that she swallowed Lord Shiva. But, due to the poison in Lord Shiva’s throat she turned extremely dull, frightful, ghastly and repulsive. She started to generate a lot of heat and fire. Her mouth impended a lot of smoke, dust and fumes.

On knowing this, Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvati, that because of this action she will be worshiped in this avatar. In this manner, she was known as Dhumavati (the one who induces smoke).

As per Lord Shiva’s curse, she is worshiped as a widow (as she swallowed Lord Shiva), whose hair are always open. She is in her most ferocious form and holds a sword in her hand.

Hence, on the eighth day of Jyeshta month, Goddess Parvati is worshiped in the form of Maa Dhumavati.

Significance Of Dhumavati Jayanti

Dhumavati Jayanti has a lot of significance for the devotees across the country.

1. Out of ten major Mahavidyas, Goddess Dhumavati is worshiped as Darun Mahavidya.
2. Goddess Dhumavati acts a destroyer of all evils, sins, demons and wrongs. It is believed that Saint Durvasa, Bhrigu, and Parshuram worshiped Goddess Dhumavati on this day to attain all the special powers.
3. It is also said that a glimpse of Goddess Dhumavati offers many blessings to all who witness her idol on this day.

Dhumavati Jayanti: Rituals Of Worshiping Goddess Dhumavati

These are some of the rituals which are practised while worshiping Goddess Dhumavati on Dhumavati Jayanti:

1. During the Dhumavati Jayanti, a special procession is organised at night for the devotees of Maa Dhumavati.
2. Puja is performed in a lonely place and Devi Mantras are also chanted.
3. Black Sesame seeds (Til) are offered to the Goddess for fulfilling one’s wishes.
4. As per the tradition, married women are not suppose to worship Maa Dhumavati. They can just have a glimpse of her from a far distance. This results in the protection her son and husband.
5. Goddess Dhumavati is worshiped by Tantriks all around the world in order to gain material wealth.

Goddess Dhumavati is associated with all kinds of auspicious acts and things. It is also believed that she appears only at the time when everything is on the verge of ending. She is the protector of the universe, who sustains us from all the odds and negative elements.

Namaste. For finer predictions, we need to look toward finer divisions. One such finer division is Nakshatra. The way a sign is the twelfth division of zodiac, similarly Nakshatra is the 27th division of zodiac. Nakshatra is also called constellation or star, sometimes, but I prefer using the term Nakshatra. As Zodiac is considered of 360 degree, each Nakshatra is 360 / 27 i.e. 13 degree 20 minutes or roughly 13.33 degrees. Like zodiac sign, each Nakshatra also has been given a name. First Nakshatra is called Ashwini, second Bharani, and last Revati. Lord or owner planet for each Nakshatra is fixed. Sequence of Nakshatra lord is as follows - Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. As Ashwini is first Nakshatra, it's Lord is Ketu. Bharani is second Nakshatra and it's Lord is Venus and so on. Nakshatra lord planet repeats after every ninth Nakshatra. In other words, 1st Nakshatra lord, 10th Nakshatra lord, and 19th Nakshatra lord are going to be same.

Nakshatra division is very important in astrology. In astrology, Dasa or planetary cycle is primarily calculated based on Nakshatra. Dasa is used to figure out the timing of events and I'll talk about that later. In a nutshell, planet borrows signification of it's Nakshatra lord. Astrologers generally forget to see Nakshatra because, we can not see Nakshatra from birth chart alone and hence fail in predictions. Planet in its Dasa period not only gives its results, but the results of its Nakshatra lord as well. So, never forget to note Nakshatra lord of each planet before proceeding to predictions.
