Importance of Ghatasthapana


Ghatasthapana is regarded as a major event of the first day of Navaratri. In Chaitra Navaratri as well as Sharad Navratri, Ghatasthapana is done during the Pratipada or the first day according to the muhurta. As per the holy scriptures, the Kalash symbolises Lord Ganesha. Thus, Lord Ganesha is worshipped first, followed by other gods and goddesses.

The nine manifestations of Goddess Durga are venerated during the nine days of Navaratri. The first day is devoted to Goddess Shailputri. The name Shailputri means the daughter of the mountains and is thus a perfect name for the daughter of Lord Himalaya. She rides on a bull and is also known by the name Vrisharudha. She holds a trident in her right hand and a lotus in the left hand. This form of Goddess Durga is also referred to as Goddess Sati.
