Ganesh Chaturthi: Birth Story of Lord Ganesha

Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha was crafted by Goddess Parvati from sandalwood (Chandan) paste, for her protection. Once Parvati had to go for bath and to make sure nobody enters inside, she instructed Lord Ganesha to stand at the door. While Ganesha was guarding the door, Lord Shiva arrived and tried to go inside. As Lord Ganesha wasn’t aware about the Lord, he stopped him from going inside. Ganesha’s this act frustrated Shiva and in extreme anger, he chopped off Ganesha’s head. However, after knowing the truth from Maa Parvati, Lord Shiva realized his mistake and replaced the head of Ganesha with an elephant’s head and Ganesha became alive. It is said that from that day, it was declared that Lord Ganesha would always be worshiped before worshiping other deities.

Ganesh Chaturthi: Ganesh Chaturthi Puja

The grand celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as “Ganesh Utsav” which starts from the establishment of Lord Ganesha idol. Large stalls are imposed in which Ganesha’s idol is established. Devotees worship Lord Ganesha with full devotion and heart. On this special day, variety of sweets are prepared and offered to Lord Ganesha. People from all over the world come together to honor the Lord. To enjoy the day to the fullest, devotees sing traditional songs and dance. Hartalika Teej is celebrated on the third day of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month. Hartalika Teej is basically a north Indian festival which is mainly celebrated by the people of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.

Hartalika Teej is celebrated by women. On this sacred day, women worship Goddess Parvati and seek her blessings. They wish and pray for the long life and good health of their husband. On the other hand, unmarried girls observe this fast and wish for an ideal husband like Lord Shiva.

In India, it is believed that Lord Shiva accepted Mata Parvati as her wife on this day. Now, let’s read the legend related to Hartalika Teej.

Hartalika Teej Vrat Legend

Mata Parvati was very much in love with Lord Shiva and she wanted him as her husband. But, being an ascetic, Lord Shiva was unaware about it. Then in order to impress Lord Shiva, Mata Parvati performed hard penance (Tapasya) for years in the Himalayas. At last, Lord Shiva realized Parvati’s love & devotion and accepted her as his wife. Since then, Mata Parvati is worshipped as ‘Hartalika’ or ‘Teej Mata’ by women.

Rituals Of Hartalika Teej Vrat

On the occasion of Hartalika Teej, women apply Mehendi (Henna) on each other’s hand and sing & dance. Varieties of sweets are prepared in homes. The following are the rituals that are performed by women on this day:

• Wake up early in the morning and take a bath
• Worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
• Observe a full day Nirjala (without water) fast
• Worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in the evening
• Offer clothes and cosmetic items to Mata Parvati like Saree, Kohl (Kajal), vermilion (Kumkum), turmeric (Haldi) and flowers
• Offer Dhoti (lioncloth) and Angocha (Towel) to Lord Shiva
• Donate the cosmetic items to Brahmini (lady Brahmin) and Dhoti and Angocha to Brahmin
• Offer 13 varieties of sweets to your mother-in-law and seek blessings
• Recite or listen Teej Vrat Katha and break your fast after sunset

It is believed that women can get all their wishes fulfilled by observing this Vrat.
