Story Behind The Name “Mahagauri”

It is said that once Maa Parvati observed a very hard penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. As a result of meditating in the open for a long time, Maa Parvati developed a dark complexion. Lord Shiva was pleased by her and accepted her devotion for him. He washed her body with Gangajal after which her body got back its original beauty and complexion. Thus, she got the name “Mahagauri” and became prominent as Mahadev’s wife. Mahagauri means extremely fair or white. She glows as white as a pearl.

Goddess Mahagauri

Maa Mahagauri sits on a bull and has four hands. In the right lower hand she holds a trident and her right hand is in the pose to ease fear. A damaru is held in her right hand and the lower one grants blessings and boons to her devotes. Her clothes and ornaments are of white color. She is the symbol of morality and kindness.

Rituals performed

Devotees who perform Ashtami, worship Goddess Mahagauri with full devotion and faith. Women offer red colored stole to the Goddess and perform the Puja. Garlands, fruits, cloves, sweets, cardamom and betel leaves are also offered to the Goddess. Her idol is bathed with milk, water, curd and is adorned with new clothes. Vermillion, sandalwood, kohl and henna are applied to the Goddess and she is covered in red clothes and placed on a neat and clean platform. The Puja begins with worshipping of Lord Ganesha with ganga jal, sandalwood, rice, roli, moli, belpatra, flowers, sweets, cloves and dakshina. Later, the Kalash is worshipped.

Navratri Fasting - A Way To Pay Tribute

Navratri is from 5th October to 13th October. The one thing which everyone does without fail during these 9 days days is, fasting (Vrat or Upavasa). This article will tell you all that you need to know about fasting during Navratri. Read on…

Navratri Vrat To Enchant The Goddess

Fasting during Navratri is a ritual widely followed, especially in North India. This is a fast which can be observed by both men and women. Some break the fast on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Navratri; whereas others break on the ninth day (Navami). The day the fast is broken, Kanjak Puja (worshipping young girls dressed as Durga) is performed. Some follow Nirjala fast (waterless), but now-a-days many opt for partial fasting. Fasting will give you a chance to cleanse your body and mind.

8 Rules To Be Followed During Fasting

  1. Food should be prepared without onions and garlic.
  2. Abstain from using common salt in meals, prepare with only rock salt.
  3. Abstain from consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol.
  4. Cut down on usage of any kind of spices.
  5. Use Singhare-Ka-Atta (water chestnut flour) or Kuttu-Ka-Atta (buckwheat flour) to make Rotis (Chapatis) or Puris.
  6. Consumption of beverages like tea and milk is allowed.
  7. Dishes made out of sago (Sabudana), barnyard millet (Sama Rice) and potato is also consumed during fasting.
  8. Abstain from making any kind of physical relations.

Rituals To Be Followed During Fasting

The devotee who is observing fast must wake up early in the morning, take bath and offer prayers to Durga Maa. The food should first be offered to the Goddess and only then consumed as Prasad (Holy food). Take the name of the Goddess before and after the meal. The food should preferably taken after sunset, after offering prayers to the Goddess and as Prasad. It is very important that the person who is observing fast keeps his/her mind pure, and free of bad or harmful thoughts. Keep the house and the surroundings clean. Light a lamp or Diya while worshipping Durga Maa and make sure the light does not go off. Avoid wearing black colored clothes. It is advisable for pregnant women, elders, children and people who have diabetes to avoid fasting. Goddess Durga is the mother who does not judge her children. Fasting is just one way of offering your prayers to Maa Durga. For those who are unable to fast, you can do something which is just as sacred as fasting, i.e feeding the poor and helping the needy, or just keeping your intentions as well as love pure toward her. If there is anything that will make Maa durga happy is to let her see her children helping one another.

Closing The Navratri Fast

Some break the fast on the eighth day (Ashtami) while some do it on the ninth day (Navami). Whenever the day may be, it is done by performing Kanjak Pujan. Nine young girls dressed as nine different forms of Goddess Durga are invited home. They are then offered Puri, Halwa and Bengal gram curry. Only after the nine young girls have consumed the offering and have blessed the person will he/she consume the food as Prasad.

Confusions About Transits: By Ascendant or Moon?

By Mrityunjai Ojha

Transit of planets has always been a tricky concept to master. It is the problem faced not only by common people, but even by able astrologers. Today, we will try clearing that confusion through this article. Read on...

Friends, we generally see that a lot of Astrologers, Astro-Lovers and common people are confused about transit. Some astrologers say that transit should be seen from Moon as we see Rashifal from Moon. On the contrary, some say transit should be seen from Ascendant (Lagna). While, some say transit should be seen from Dasha (period) Lord placement in birth chart. (Suppose you have Sun Dasha going on and Sun is placed in your 10th house, so they take 10th house as first house for transit.)

Due to this, people who are interested in Astrology or those who are learning, get confused in Moon, Ascendant and Dasha Lord. There are many systems for astrological predictions. Different systems have different views, but ultimately prediction matters. So, there is a need to understand the system properly and one may choose which astrological system suits you better.

Planetary transit

As per my knowledge, transit should be seen as per the astrological system that you follow.

Traditional Astrology (Parashari - Hindu Astrology System)

In our traditional astrology, we see transit from Moon, here Moon placement in the chart is taken as Lagna (ascendant) to analyse transit. Some astrologers follow double transit also, like they see from ascendant and Moon both. Some use related divisional charts too with ascendant chart, for example D-1 chart (Lagna chart) and D-10 (Dasamsa) for profession and D-1 as well as D-9 for marriage and allied matters. Slow moving planets (Saturn and Jupiter) and Dasha Lords are seen in the transit for major events. For monthly transit, the Sun; and for daily transit, the Moon and it’s Nakshatra (constellation) Lord need to be seen.

Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP system)

In KP system, Ascendant is taken for transit analysis. Transit of DBA Lords in different star Lords (Nakshatra Lord) and sub-lords are taken in the predictions for timing the events. Transit of slow planets (Saturn & Jupiter) for yearly, Sun for monthly and Moon for daily transit are also seen.

Nadi System

In Nadi system, house placement of a specific planet in birth chart is taken in transit analysis. Suppose you have to see transit of Saturn in Nadi analysis and Saturn is placed in 8th house, then we will see transit from 8th house, 8th house will be considered as 1st house. If Jupiter is placed in 2nd house, then for Jupiter analysis we will take 2nd house as 1st house.

So, the conclusion is what astrological system you follow, do not mix 2 systems. This also depends on the excellence of the astrologer, an experienced astrologer can analyze the transit in a better way.
