Navratri Puja celebrations in 2013 begin on the 5th of October and end on the 13th of October. Dussehra or Vijayadashami concludes the celebration of Sharad Navratri and is celebrated with much devotion by all. The nine days of Navratri is dedicated to the Mother Goddess Durga.

1st - 3rd day: Goddess Durga, who represents supreme power and strength, is worshipped.
4th - 6th day: Goddess Lakshmi, who represents wealth and prosperity, is worshipped.
7th - 9th day: Goddess Saraswati, who represents wisdom and spirituality, is worshipped.

On the last ninth day, Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls who are dressed as the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped.

2nd Day Of Navratri: Goddess Of Spiritual Strength - Maa Brahmacharini

The second day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Brahmacharini. Brahmacharini, as the name suggests, means one who does Tapasya (penance). She is one of the most beautiful forms of Goddess Durga and represents spiritual enlightenment.

Brahmacharini is the Goddess of Rishi-Munis, Yogis (sages). Her appearance is divine and full of light. She has four hands of which two carry weapons, one carries Rudraksha Japa Mala (rosary) and one hand is free to give her blessings for the ones who seeks it. She bears a calm face and glows in the divine light. Her Vahana (carrier) is the sacred cow. 

To obtain Lord Shiva’s love and attention, Maa Parvati went into deep and hard Tapasya (penance). The fruits of this endeavour was winning Lord Shiva’s love and she came to be known as Maa Brahmacharini. Planet Mars is governed by Maa Brahmacharini

Rituals Performed

The rituals performed on the second day is same as all the other days of Navratri. The idol is decorated and placed on a platform. Flowers of red colors are used for performing Puja. Along with Maa Brahmacharini, other forms of Durga are also worshipped. A lamp is lit with pure Ghee and the Mantras are chanted while performing the Puja. A Bhog (sacred food) of sugar is offered to Maa Brahmacharini.

First day of Navratri: The day of Mata Shailputri

Navratri, also known as the Festival of Nine Nights, is celebrated twice in a year with great zeal and enthusiasm in honor of goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. Navratri celebrated in the month of October-November is called “Ashwin Navratri”. During the nine days of Navratri one must work upon their aahar (food), vyavhaar (behaviour) and acharan (character).

Mata Shailputri

Mata Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri because she is the first form or avatars of Durga. She is the daughter of “Parvata Raju” or the mountain king. In her previous birth she was the daughter of King Daksha and was known as “Sati Bhavani Mata”. Mata Shailputri rides on a bull and holds a Trishul in her right hand and a lotus in the left hand. Her face is blissful with a pleasant smile.

Ritual performed on First Day

On the first day “ghatsthapana” is done in which a small bed of mud is prepared and barley seeds are sown over it. A vessel of water (kalash tied with a red sacred thread) is placed on this bed. Above this Kalash is placed a bowl filled with rice. A coconut wrapped with mango leaves is then placed over it (Kalash). This Kalash is not touched during the nine days. An oil lamp or diya (Akhand Jyoti) is lit near the Kalash which burns endlessly for the nine days. Garland made of fresh flowers is placed on the image of the goddess and Mantras are recited. Holy book “Durga Saptshati” is read. In the night, “Aarti” is performed with devotion and dedication.

Mantra to Chant

To seek the blessings of Mata Shail Putri one must chant the Mantra “Om aim hring kleem chamundayi vichche”. 

Fasting During Navratri 

Many devotees observe fast during these auspicious nine days. They get up early in the morning, take bath and offer prayer to the goddess. They depend on “Satvik” (vegetarian) food which includes fruits, nuts, potatoes, sabudana and curd. Singhare ka atta (kuttu ka atta) is also used to prepare puris or rotis for the fast. 

During Navratri one should avoid eating non-vegetarian food and should also avoid alcohol. In some families onion and garlic are also not used during Navratri.

The Nine Days Of Navratri

Sarva Pitru Amavasya: The Last Day Of Shraddh

Sarva Pitru Amavasya - The last day of the Shraddh is known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. On 4th October, 2013 Shraddh will end with Sarva Pitru Amavasya. This day has its own importance because on this day Shraddh of all the deceased members can be performed irrespective of the tithi. This day is also known to perform the shraddh of those whose death date is not known or forgotten.

Sarva Pitru Amavasya, as per the North Indian calendar, falls in Ashwin month and according to the South Indian calendar, falls in the month of Bhadrapada. Sarva Pitru means all the forefathers and ancestors while the term Amavasya means new Moon day. Sarva Pitru Amavasya is celebrated on the last day of the Pitru Paksha and is the most significant day for Pitru Paksha. The aim of this day is to pay respect and honor the ancestors with utmost devotion.

Rituals Performed

The person performing the Shraddh washes the feet of the priest or the Brahmin and offers them a clean seat to sit. Deva Paksha Brahmin sits facing the east whereas, Matru Paksha and Pitra Paksha Brahmin sits facing the north direction. The gods are offered a mixture of barley and water and are worshipped with diya, dhoop and flowers. A sacred thread is put on the right shoulder and splint is donated. Mantras are chanted to call the ancestors. Food is offered to the fire (Agni) while chanting “Agneya Kavyavahanaya Swaha” “Somaya Pitramate Swaha”. The Brahmins are served with the food prepared and sesame seeds are sprinkled on the floor.

Importance Of Sarva Pitru Amavasya

Performing rituals on this day brings blessings, prosperity and welfare. People who were not able to perform Shraddh during the 15 days of Pitra Paksha and also the people who do not know the death date of their ancestors should perform Tarpan on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.It is believed that on this day, the ancestors and the forefathers visit their home. If Shraddh is not performed on this day then the ancestors go back unhappy.

Why It Is Considered Important

Astrology says that knowingly or unknowingly if our ancestors have committed any mistakes then those mistakes are reflected in the horoscope of their children as Pitra Dosh and as a result they suffer from bad effects or experiences. All this sufferings happen because the malefic planets create hindrance to the favorable results of the benefic planets. As a result, the soul of the ancestor wanders the earth in search of peace. Vimshottari Dasha

Vimshottari Dasha System - According to this system all humans have a lifespan of 120 years. If only the above statement was true, well.. why don't we find out what is the explanation behind that statement. Read on to know more about Vimshottari Dasha system.

Indian astrology makes predictions mostly on the basis of dasha period. Among all the dasha periods such as- Soda Shuttari, Ashtottari, Vimshottari and Dwadash Attari, Vimshottari system is the most important. This system uses Moon as its base for making predictions. The life cycle of this dasha system is 120 years long.

Vimshottari Dasha is calculated on the basis of the position of Moon in the birth chart. Starting dasha period is calculated according to the Janma Nakshatra. According to Vimshottari Dasha System every astrological planet is assigned to Mahadasha or major period. Vimshottari dashas of the 7 planets and 2 nodes of Moon have different effects and influences on the human life.

Through Vimshottari dasha analysis one can know about the events of his/her life. He can also know which part of his life is favorable and which is full of difficulties.

Vimshottari Dasha System

According to the design of Vimshottari dasha system,

Left side has: (Saturn 19) + (Jupiter 16) + (Mars 7) = 42 years

Right side has: (Mercury 17) + (Venus 20) + (Sun 6) = 43 years

For all 9 planets there are 120 lunar years in the Vimshottari system. Both these halves have 60 years each. Left half has deficit of 18 years, which is possible to be given by Rahu only, and right half has deficit of 17 years which is possible to be given by combination of Ketu and Moon. Thus, the lower picture of the dasha system is considered. Rahu and Ketu should be placed opposite to each other, and Moon is placed along with Sun but not in between Sun or any planet (Venus). Rahu and Ketu are kept away from Sun and Moon. As distances from Sun is the basis of Vimshottari dasha system, it is believed to start with Sun. In the lower picture, the sequence is, Sun : Moon : Mars : Rahu : Jupiter : Saturn : Mercury : Ketu : Venus which is also the sequence found in ancient texts.

According to Vimshottari dasha system complete lifespan of an individual is equal to 120 lunar years and that is equal to 116.4 solar years which after rounded off, is same as mentioned in the Chandogya Upanishad.

Obstacles Encountered

Two obstacles of this system which prevent accurate timing of events are:

1. Use of Drik-pakshiya mathematics or modern astronomy used for finding true longitudes of ascendant and planets etc.

2. Use of solar year for calculation, in spite of the fact that all ancient texts explicitly mention, the year of Vimshottari system consists of only 360 days.

Conclusion

Vimshottari Dasha System is the best system known to attain knowledge of the past and future. This system is very helpful in calculating the exact events on one’s life. All it takes is just a experience of its knowledge.
